This week, I worked with a client to review their terms and conditions, which had been copied and pasted from various internet sources! 📄✂️

With their blessing, I wanted to share this message - think twice before you hit Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V!

(a) Unsuitable Terms & Unwanted Obligations: 🤷‍♂️📜

Copied/pasted terms probably won't suit your unique business or industry needs. Worse yet, they could impose obligations on your business that you're not prepared to comply with. This can lead to unforeseen headaches, financial burdens, and even disputes down the line. 🤯

Customizing your legal documents ensures your contracts are tailored to your specific business requirements, reducing risks and ensuring clarity!

(b) Potential Errors: 📝🚫

Legal documents are rarely a one-size-fits-all and copied documents could include errors and outdated clauses that are detrimental to your business when a dispute comes up.

Make sure your documents are reviewed to eliminate pitfalls and accurately reflect the current industry and legal landscape.

(c) Intellectual Property Infringement 📚🚫

Copying legal documents can be a breach of someone else's copyright! This can result in IP infringement claims, cease and desist letters, legal proceedings, not to mention compensation and reputational damage! Imagine that piece of news hitting LinkedIn or other news sites just as your business is booming! What will customers think of you?

Protect your bottom line by having documents properly drafted that you can use repeatedly and without any worries!

(d) Inappropriate Legal Jurisdiction: 🌐🚀

Almost all contracts specify jurisdiction and governing law to determine what law applies when disputes arise. It is entirely possible that copying and pasting documents leads to the use of laws that are not suitable to your transaction or engagement, which will cost you a lot of money when pursuing remedies to protect your legal rights.

Your contracts must consider the specific laws and regulations relevant to your industry and location.

🔑 Key Takeaway:

A strong legal foundation is one important factor to your success. Don't take the risk by copying and pasting! Seek professional legal advice that tailors your contracts to your business model, industry and legal landscape! Your investment will save you money in the longer term.
